Ayuna Mano was born in Hikone, Shiga, Japan. She grew up surrounded by the arts, influenced by her father, an art teacher, and her mother, a vocalist. Living in the rich natural landscape of the countryside, she spent her childhood immersed in the presence of countless forms of life—from plants to the small creatures that inhabit them. This early experience fostered a deep reverence for nature and an awareness of the spirit that dwells within it, which continues to form the foundation of her artistic work.

From a young age, she loved drawing while letting her imagination expand freely, as well as writing stories and poetry. After graduating from an art university, she spent time living abroad. However, when a member of her family developed a mental illness, she returned to Japan and began a period of caregiving that lasted two and a half years. During this time, she witnessed firsthand how the invisible realm of the “mind” and the visible “body” profoundly influence one another, and how the delicate balance between them sustains life. This experience became a pivotal turning point that deeply shaped the course of her life.

Motivated by this experience, she began studying various healing practices in order to care for her family. Through this process, she realized that art and therapeutic practices share a similar power to gently influence the human heart, and her artistic style gradually transformed. After her caregiving period ended, she worked under a Tokyo-based artist, gaining experience in artwork production, exhibitions, and stage projects. At the same time, her interest in healing deepened, leading her to continue studying therapeutic practices.

During her first visit to Hawai‘i, she encountered Hawaiian culture’s deep reverence for nature and the divine, as well as the existence of ancient Hawaiian healing traditions. She was deeply moved by their philosophy of prayer and connection to life.

Shaped by these life experiences, Mano’s work expresses healing energy that gently yet powerfully resonates with the human spirit. Themes such as spirituality, the natural environment, celestial bodies, and plants appear throughout her work. Her artworks are psychological landscapes that embody her personal experiences and emotions.

Mano works primarily with woodblock printing, a traditional technique that she combines with a contemporary sensibility. At times she moves beyond the conventional framework of woodblock printmaking, intuitively incorporating messages and essences from the natural world around her.

She is particularly known for her use of traditional techniques such as multi-color printing and bokashi (gradation), layering colors repeatedly on a single sheet through her own distinctive printing methods. This process creates delicate, luminous colors with depth and transparency that resonate quietly with the viewer.

As both an artist and a therapist, Ayuna Mano pursues healing through the two fields of art and therapy. Her works embody the harmony between these practices, offering viewers a sense of calm, comfort, and gentle restoration.

What her works emit are the gentle passage of time within everyday life, the traces of living beings, the sound of small existences breathing, and the music of nature expressed through woven words and forms. They depict beings that traverse the space between the inevitable reality of our presence here and an ambiguous world that exists alongside it.

Ayuna Mano is both an artist and a therapist, pursuing healing through the two fields of art and therapy. Her works harmonize these dual aspects, offering a sense of healing and tranquility to those who encounter them.
